A couple weeks ago we had a group of paddlers unlike any we typically have: the New Zealand Paralympic Swim Team. We knew these were going to be some tough nuts as their reputation for being bold, fearless and adrenalin-craving preceded them. They arrived excited and ready to get on the river where they felt right at home. We have to admit that it's rare to get paddlers that are as keen as these guys were to hit the waterfalls. Flips at Tutea Falls (the big, 7 meter waterfall on the Kaituna) didn't dampen anybody's appetite for more rapids; in fact, getting dumped in the water only fired them up even more.... calling out for another "flip! flip! flip!" when the second boat descended Tutea.
Their energy, ability, and commitment to have fun are enviable and inspiring. We hope they come rafting again with us soon; we will be talking about that trip for a long time!
